I am reminded, and I give thanks

so I finally downloaded all 120 picks off my cell phone today and i had forgotten all about these .. we were at the local farm supply store last spring and they had so many "cute little fuzzies". I just wanted to scoop them all up and take them home in my pocket, but I couldn't figure out how to explain the sudden need for a chicken coup and duck pond to my husband ...so, I just took picks home with me to remember them chicks by.

It was a small blessing actually to find these today. With all the death going on in the world, I was starting to just feel a bit dismal about everything.

Then I found these forgotten photos and it reminded me that with death comes rebirth .
And even though, right now, we may not be able to see our way through the brush and brambles before us , a hand will come to us and it will guide us through.

It was a much needed bright spot and a warm welcoming reminder of all things greater than myself .

You know the old saying of not being able to see the forest for the trees ? I had been feeling like that. Like no matter how hard or not I looked I just couldn't see what I thought I needed to see.

But, I am reminded that , when the time comes, I will see clearly all that I need to .

I still must take some time to ponder my course and I will have to do my part to clear my path just like every one else must do from time to time.

But isn't it wonderful to know , that we are not alone when we must face lifes unknown?

Today I give thanks for All I love and all that loves me .
and it harm none
including me
Blessed Be

Memories,Memorabilia and some Snail-Mail Goodness

So I have found my self lost in the past over the last several days. It started with me Looking for a favorite photo of my Grama Grace to post with her Poor Man's Cake recipe and, after digging around in the closet where such treasures are safely tucked, it has taken on a life/blog of it's own . Yup! I spent the last 2 days focused on scanning in photos and posting them in some semblance of order as to who they are on my other/new blog and emailing a couple of family members the addy for it so they can see what I have (and hopefully help add to it at some point some of the goodies they have).. I know i should probably go to something like ancestry.com, but i just don't have the extra in my budget to pay thier membership fees.. so a second blog will have to be the solution .

In among all the photos and such are all sorts of fun post cards and letters and other memorabilia, like the photo of the post card on this post ( from the 1930's I believe).

We were such a good nation at helping each other keep a "stiff upper lip" and muddle through such ruff times. Now, in the age of computers, and I must admit I am guilty of this too, we tend to forget the magick that can be brought to us or delivered to another through such expressions as the hand written letter and post notes. Yes, Yes . I Know we are trying to save the trees and the planet by cutting our paper usage and all..

But for just a moment,

close your eyes;
think back to that one special occasion when you are the one running up the road or stepping out onto the porch to retrieve the mail left by the local postal carrier;
Feel the leap in your heart when you read the envelop and discovered the letter was for YOU!; Allow, for a moment, the return of the feeling of anticipation at what was in side of that envelope; And now, relax in the memory of how excited and comforted you were to get the news, photo or gift that magick little card carried from some one who remembered you!

There now didn't that take you away on a mini-memory-vacation filled with romantic reminiscences of the past?

Believe it or not there are still those out there with out e-mail and cell phones and other fancy modern day gizmos of communication. I bet they would love to hear from you right now.. so make a little note card from something reclaimed or buy a little note cared and send them some warm fuzzy feeling to reminisce about some future day .

Happy Blessings every one

Grama Grace's Poor Man's Cake

This was My Grama Grace in 1933
(aka my "Cha-caw-go" Grandma. She was very insistent we learn how to say Chicago properly!) and this is what I inherited as her recipe for a cake she called a "Poor Man's Cake ."

I am making no claim that she invented this cake in any way ! I am only saying that this is how she made them and what she taught me about them and making them .

Poor Mans Cake was big thing in our house. After she and Grampa came to live with us, it became even more important. She would ship these cakes all over to family and friends most often at thier request.

The Magick of the Poor man's cake was all the substitutions you could use to make it work. It was a cake that could be made with what was on hand in the depression era kitchen, and it always tasted the same .. WONDERFUL!!!
For example , if there were no eggs in the house then you could sugstitute with 1 teaspoon baking soda in 2 teaspoons hot water for 1 egg; or if you couldn't get brown sugar, then for each cup needed in brown sugar, you would mix 1 cup white sugar with 1 1/2 teaspoons of the best molasses ( or sorghum) you had on hand .If you didn't have Shortening, you could use lard (don't reduce salt if using lard)or fresh creamery butter and reduce salt in the given recipe to 1/2 teaspoon ). If you didn't have or couldn't afford to buy raisens, but you had dried apricots or cherries or apples or currents or..( you get he picture) other fruites from the tree out back or put up over the summer for winter storage you could use that fruit instead of the raisens. If you had Just a hand full of nut meats you could chop and add them , or if you were lucky enough at Yule to get your hands on an orange , you would grate the peal and use it in the cake for an extra holiday zing, and you didn't waist any part of that precious orange either. (the above photo shows 2 cakes staked. I divided the batter to make 2 some what different cakes and to make them go further.)

Making Grama's Poor Man's Cake also tought us about problem solving, flexibility, and to appreciate what you had and not worry about what you didn't . I often think that being raised by Depression era elders has helped me help my family in so many ways in these currant and in past economically trying times.

I am posting the recipe the way she wrote it and the way I most often use it , but I must admit I do like to play with it a bit, adding different fruits and nuts and some times a bit of chocolate chips ( especially white) to the cake .. I love this cake almost as much as I love my Grama Grace, I am so glade to have such wonderful memories too, they make me feel as though she was right there in my kitchen , filling me with her love and guidance every time i make Grama Grace's Poor Mans Cake.

Grama Grace's Poor Man's Cake
2 cups brown sugar
2 cups good water heated till hot
2 teaspoons shortening
3/4 cup raisins
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon, ground fine
1 teaspoon cloves, ground fine
1/2 teaspoon allspice, ground fine

Boil all the above for 5 minutes, cool!

next add the following:
1 teaspoon baking soda in 2 teaspoons hot water .
stir in well then add:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
Mix all together well!!
pour into greased tube pan(s) ( also known as a bundt pan)

Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees F.

If you divide the batter over 2 pans, you will want to start checking at 45 minutes for
done-ness ad keep a close eye on it after until done as this cake can burn fast!

If you plan to ship this cake to some one , let it completely cool. then glaze it with a fruite jelly mixed with 3 tablespoons hot water and basted on the whole cake surface . let set 12 hours more on wire rack to "dry" , then sprinkle with a bit of sugar ( powdered) before packing in a wax paper lined cake tin . Ship right away.

Hope you enjoy , it's great in the morning with some scrambled eggs and hot coffee!!

Blessings !

Physical theropay for Body , Mind and Spirit

After being in bed for 2 days I was so glad to be up out of bed and able to walk in the SNOW! I tell ya it took every thing I had not to let myself fall backwards into the almost knee deep white stuff and make snow angels! But I was a good girl and didn't .
I couldn't go very far or stay out to long because I was using the walker... no way the wheel chair would make it out any where in that deep stuffs.
But even walking just around the yard I found color and interest and something to spark my imagination in my winter walk .

The red berries are of the wild honey suckle that grows over one of the arbors to the east of the house seam to bow gracefully to some unseen dance partner.

the echinacea seed heads in thier new winter white hats look as though they are waiting to be swept away to the music of winter and spun around some mystical dance floor. I wonder who thier dance partner will be??

the witches broom in her new winter gown must be the queen of the ball.

Oh, Will the yellow cone flower seed heads be dancing with the echinacea ??
or will the tiny sea pinks sweep every one away with thier delicate grace?

the Pine with it's New winter gloves seams to be offering it's hand for spin around the floor as well.
the handsome trees in thier fresh winter coats seam to be standing guard for this mystical mystery winter ball
could this be the hidden entrance to the dance ??
Doesn't Rose Hip's flare just take your breath away in her stunning winter reds ?
and the stately red canes of the black raspberry seams to say they are ready to whisk the ladies around the floor at a moments notice
oh I would love to stay and dance and play and sit to listen to the music of winters symphony
but old man winter is telling my bones it's time to go to and sit beside the fire
the sun seams to be saying it is staying in as well ... I hope that weather it's to a mystical ball or to the grocery , you all have save journeys in this winter storm a blowen .

2010 garden - the plans/goals

time to set my goals for the season

1. to grow enough produce to
  • a. feed my family ( 13)
  • b. enough produce to give to those sharing thier garden space with me (2 gardens) (13)
  • c. enough to share with my family friends in some way (countless)
  • d. enough to donate to the local food banks (2 counties - every little bit helps)
  • e. enough to sell (trade) at the farmers market to pay for the garden to do it again next year.

2. to reclaim and re build my gardens
  • to save as many plants as possible in cutting gardens, medicinal gardens, berry and fruit gardens, tea gardens, memory gardens and herb/veggie gardens
  • to turn and burn one garden bed at a time
  • to plant crops that enrich each bed for it's plant types
  • to re establish perennials in fresh beds with better weed control in problem areas
  • to maintain or create more handicap accessibility in my gardens for my self and others

3. to use the gardening as both mental and physical therapy
  • a. will have to find rides to each spot , alternating days and some one to sit with me as i am not supposed to be out side alone in case I fall and go boom.
  • b. will have to figure out how to make garden spots wheel chair and walker accessible with out damaging or wasting garden space that isn't mine to waist.
  • c. how to garden with the current level of physical limitations in a way that builds up my strengths and stabilizes or strengthens my weaknesses as well as leaves me with the energy to harvest and distribute my goodies.
  • to hopefully convince my friends that organic/companion/chemical free gardening is better and healthier
  • to be there to cover my plants while any chemicals are sprayed as I don't like chemicals on my food (and to hopefully do it with such a meaner as to not offend my friends or seam ungrateful for thier kindness, which I truly am grateful for!)

o.k., thats what I got for now.. I will update this as things change, and I think of more.

Seeds, Hot Joe , a Blanky, and Candy Onions

Finally!
A day of rest. I have been fighting through extensive exhaustion for the last several months which has put quite a bit of a damper on most of our holidays this year.

But Finally, a day I have been chomping at the bit to enjoy..

I am spending my day at my leisure, With the first Seed Catalogs to arrive this year, a good cup of Joe with a double shot of espresso and a comfy, old, trusty blankie...

I 'll be interested to see how the weather challenge goes. Some thing in my inner core says I will want some good drought tolerant varieties this year. (especially having to plant all of my edibles in some one elses gardens this year.) My Friends Judy and Jay have large properties and gardens, and have graceiously offered me garden room since we have to turn and burn the areas we grow food and it will take me at least the the frist growing season to recondition the soil. but maybe the second growing season i can at least plant some roots crops and tender greens for late season salads and such. we'll see.

I just noticed , IT"S SNOWING !! WOOOWHOOO!
I love when it snows, especially if its a "warm" snow. ( Yes I know that sounds contradictory) I think , if it is warm enough, I will interrupt my day of garden catalogs and garden planning for a wheelchair ride in the snow.. but if i can't get out in it , I can at least watch it fall.

Any way, back to the garden

So I know that I will have to re start my winter onions ( aka Egyptian walking onions) and I want to put a patch of Candy onions in.
If you have never had a candy onion... you need to find one at the farmers market and try it , if you don't have room for a garden to grow a few . They are positively the BEST sweet onion out there, in my opinion.

yes that candy onion in the photo is as large (or larger) than some of the canning pumpkins harvested last year!

For long term storage over winter months , you cant beat a properly stored candy onion. These large onions are ..hummm.. DREAMY! ( that's a good word for them.)
They make the best onion rings, are superb in french onion soup and quiet tasty on a chilli-dog to say the least of them . These gems are wonderful in any dish quite honestly. OH and if you are one who uses onion plasters for chest colds.. these are the ones you want!

I prefer to buy the onions plants when I can find them as they produce the largest sizes at harvest, with sets coming in second and seed taking the very longest. Plus starting with plants or sets gives them more time in our local northern climate to mature.

Did yo uknow that as the days get shorter the onion stops growing? This is why onions are marked as to the day lenght ( amount of sun light hours in a day) you need to grow them.
These are a mid-day /day length neutral onion which means thay should do well in my corner of the world as they are not quite as fussy about how long the day is as are some onions .

I need to get them ordered in this week so they are here in time to plant long befor my last frost day ( I usualy plant in mid to late feburary , some times going as late as into the first 10 day of march (some times Ii have to wait till a bit later still ) . I like to get them in the ground as sooon as the snow melts and the groungs thaws so they get to the proper size for harvest.

Well, enough about the candy onion for now, I am off to start planning my first garden catalog order of the season. WOOO WHOOO!!

Till later!

Weather Lore Challenge 2010

There is an old lore/ wives tale that says :

"The first 12 days of the New Year
Predict general weather conditions and patterns for the next 12 months."

Now, the way I understand, this applies to only the local weather (guesstimate a 15 to 25 mile radius around your house say ) and individual interpretation. I was also taught to take it a bit further . The morning hours tell the weather of the first 8 to 10 days of the month, the late morning to early evening hours tell the weather the mid 14-ish days of the month and (obviously), the evening/night hours tell the weather of the last 8 to 10 days of the month.

So here is my challenge ,
and yours should you choose to accept.

Starting today , and for the next 12 days I shall log the weather conditions locally (my house).
Then at the end of each month I shall update this page to tell how the weather was actually and how it stacked up to my prediction... if you choose to participate then on the 13 of January , 2010 leave a comment to this post containing general local of where you are and your weather conditions and predictions for your little corner of the world. Then come back at the end of each corresponding months and share your results .

OH, about my prediction ability and alternate goals of this challenge : Well this is where the physical therapy comes in . I am also using this challenge as a form of physical therapy to make me get out of the house for at least 15 min 3 times a day , but I cant always make it out of the house into the days weather by myself, so I tend to rely on the interpretations which come to me via my husband and others; therefor your results may be more accurate than mine, but hopefully the challenge will help me/us rebuild some endurance and strength I/we may have lost over the last several months.

So, on to it ~

Predictions:
Ma Fey's house in North-Central Indiana, USA

Jan 1, 2010 for the rest of January
at Ma Fey's house: sunny and dry that morning , snow in the afternoon and was bitter cold that evening. So I say January will be dry most of the month bitter cold in the last week to 10 days of January and the highest amounts of precipitation coming in the middle 10 to 14 days of the month.
Follow up: January brought the mid winter thaw in mid month. it was coldest in the last 8 days of the month-pipe freezing cold. most of the precipitation fell right at the line between the first 10 and second 10 days of the month, so I was bit off there.

Jan 2, 2010 for February
at Ma Fey's house: Snow in the very early am , with glorious sunshine through out most of the day and COLD temperatures ,though no more precipitation for the day; So I say, February's will be cold and dryer than usual, with the heaviest amounts of precipitation being in the first week to 10 days of the month , with little to no precipitation following and temperatures being a bit lower than normal.
Follow up: February is as predicted in my little corner of the world. Our heaviest accumulations came with in the first 10 days give or take one . While others had snow we had barely a dusting on the few days it did snow in the later part of the month and most all new fall melted away by mid day. though all around us falls the snow up to mountain high piles in some states this month even as close a radius as 20 miles we have had very little to speak in truth. in the last few days the temps are so cold . and a bit lower than usual though nothing drastic, but i wouldn't plan on planting a rose bush any time with in the next couple-3 weeks or so ..

Jan 3, 2010 for March
at Ma Fey's House: Snow in the morning , sunny till sunset , then snow late in the evening and through the night .. and COLD all day. So I say March 2010 will come in like a lamb and go out like a lion with the middle days of March being the driest and the hole month being cooler than in past years. ( humm better get the crop protectors/ row covers out, seams like there may still be a few nights of frosty weather in March )

Jan 4, 2010 for April
at Ma Fey's House: snow on and off today, with warm sunshine in the afternoon, but bitter cold all day. Well I don't think I will get much in the way of help watering the garden from the April showers so if I want those May flowers I will want to be more diligent in watering in the middle of the month and toward the final few days of April. and the more tender plantings of that month will need some extra warmth from ground cover and over head cover. Easter will be April 4th in 2010 so I would not be surprised to see snow and cold weather over the Easter weekend this year ( even if only a few flurries ).

Jan 5, 2010 for May
at Ma Fey's House: snow flurries with little accumulation turning sunny in the after noon and now flurries or snow in the evening but COLD all day; so I say May will be a cooler than usual month with little rain. ( there goes the water bill especially if the rain cater barrels arn't gonna be replenished with spring rains )

Jan 6, 2010 for June
at Ma Fey's House: snow flurries in the morning with no accumulation, agian sunny in the late after noon and no snowfall well after midnight, a little warmer when the sun was our but mostly cold all day: so I say June will be yet another dry month but the temperatures won't be as high most of the month with possibly the warmest weather of June comming in the middle of the month.

Jan 7, 2010 for July
at Ma Fey's House: SNOW! Glorious SNOW all day ! But it was lighter in the middle of the day with bits of sunshine peeking through the clouds; the temperature was warmer than the day before ; so I say July will be most humid in the first part and last part of the month with a good to fair amount of rain at those times too (will want to watch for molds and diseases on plants, conditions are perfect to bread them now) with the hottest part in middle of the month (which makes me think we could be heading to late summer early fall drought conditions) .

Jan 8, 2010 for August
at Ma Fey's House: we had very cold temps today and very little snow. (though the weather man said we were suppose to get some good lake affect , we didn't, but folks about 1 mile north of us did get a good snow.) So, I say August in my little corner of the world will be HOT and Dry all month . We will have some rain, coming in about the late middle to the end of the month but it won't be enough to crops any good except for those which like a dryer August.

Jan 9, 2010 for September
at Ma Fey's House: It's been bitter cold all day, and it was bright and sunny! Had a few flurries in the evening, just after sun set to late evening, though no a lot. SO I say It will be Hot and dry for most of September, with the main amount of precipitation coming at the end ( last 2 weeks or so)of the month . ( I better plan to pay for Lots of water to water the gardens wile I am budgeting for the gardens.)

Jan 10, 2010 for October
at Ma Fey's House: It was bitter cold most of the day , though it was a bit warmer in the am than at noon and later through out the day ;there have been very light snow flurries on and off through out the day; sun was out on and off most of the days well . So I say, October weather will be a roller coaster ride, Hottest part in the beginning but Colder than normal at the end the month; precipitation will be low but evenly distributed through out the month. ( bet the first snow fall in my neck of the woods comes before Halloween, though there probably won't be any accumulation from it ).

Jan 11, 2010 for November
at Ma Fey's House: Flurries all day , With the lightest being from about mid day to mid night; but sun shine about mid day ( i love how the snow glitters when the sun hits it );was Cold all day, but with in norms for the date. So I say November will start out on the warmer side of norm and precipitations begin to return with the warmest and driest period in the middle of the month.

Jan 12, 2010 for December
at Ma Fey's House: Warmer than the past several days light flurries in the early morning hours, some sun in the mid day but cloudy the rest of the day. SO, I say we'll have a slightly warmer than usual December in 2010 with most of the months precipitation in the beginning of the month. ( we probably wont have snow fall on Yule/Christmas locally, but I hope I am wrong on that part) .
